The Challenge
Rapid changes are occurring in the media industry, technology, and online readers’ behaviors. To stay on the pulse and prepare for the future, Rappler needed a complete remodeling of their news delivery platform. The priority was for modernization in both appearance and functionality. They sought Code Engine’s support to develop a system that would reduce time spent on creating, managing, validating and publishing content, plus provide sophisticated analytics to guide data-driven decisions.
The Solution
To guide every decision with a data-driven action plan and insights from deep analysis, we kicked off Rappler’s platform transformation through comprehensive interviews with the agency’s key stakeholders. We quickly learned their most urgent need was to facilitate multi-type content and simplify content management. We delivered a cutting-edge solution by implementing advanced Google Cloud Platform (GCP) architecture into our design of Rappler’s new content management system (CMS). We also utilized a combination of React and WordPress API to achieve the best CMS and mobile-first solution language for Rappler’s users. In partnership with Rappler and their external design and data teams, our team at Code Engine Studio developed a comprehensive MVP (minimum viable product) for their news delivery platform. This MVP will serve as a valuable tool for rapidly collecting information about users’ interactions to inform ongoing program enhancements.
The Results
Rappler’s new platform will greet its readers with a modern design that provides an optimized user experience. Behind the scenes, this platform’s effective and reliable content management system uses the latest technology to facilitate rich media posts and enhance authors’ and editors’ flexibility in using and creating content. Improved editorial flow, including automated story submissions and notifications, adds more consistency, efficiency, and automation, saving valuable time and effort. The demand for tech services related to content creation dramatically decreased thanks to the platform’s high functionality and intuitive design.

- Writers: simpler tools, mobile tools, easier editorial flow
- Media Team: single point of management within the CMS and control of media presentation (sizing)
- Editors: Cleaner editorial flow and integration with Slack and notifications
Investigative Team: A locked articles feature ensures sensitive information within an article is only viewable by members of the investigative team - Tech Team: Decreased custom coded content creation, reduction in production and maintenance time and greater system stability during traffic spikes.
